Brother witnessed crash carnage

THE brother of a teenage driver killed in a horror crash in Forrestdale today rushed to the scene but arrived to find him fatally injured.

Police say a truck was travelling south on Tonkin Highway when it and a blue Toyota sedan collided about 6.15am as the car attempted to turn right on to Forrest Road.

The 18-year-old male driver of the Toyota died at the scene despite the desperate efforts of passers-by including a nurse and an off-duty police officer.

The 24-year-old truck driver was not injured, while the driver of a third vehicle which was hit as it waited to turn on to the highway was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Major crash investigators examined the scene for several hours and said preliminary assessments indicated speed was not a factor.

Sgt Shaun Peters said it was still unclear what caused the smash and the investigation was continuing.

“We’re not sure why the blue car has turned with oncoming traffic,” Sgt Peters said.

The death takes WA’s road toll to 46 for the year, just days before the start of the historically fatality-prone Easter long weekend.
